Minnesota Child Tax Credit for Twin Cities Families

February 28, 2024, Katie Huynh

The Minnesota Child Tax Credit supports expanded tax benefits for the state’s families of up to $1,750 for each child under age 18. To receive the Child Tax Credit, families must file their Minnesota state income tax by April 15. Families can visit claimyourmoneymn.com to learn more the requirements, how to claim the Child Tax Credit, and finding help with filing taxes.

The Minnesota Child Tax Credit was passed during the last legislative session for the 2023 tax year. Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities and many nonprofits across the state had signed onto the Minnesota Budget Project’s work to advance a new Minnesota Child Tax Credit (CTC). This initiative builds on the success of the temporary Federal CTC that reduced child poverty during the pandemic by 40%. Families used these funds for groceries, rent, diapers, and other basics. Thank you to everyone who joined us in advocating for this critical initiative last year!

The Minnesota Budget Project is a nonpartisan initiative of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits that advances policy solutions to support economic security for all Minnesotans. Visit their website to learn more about this and other policies that support children and families.
