Mentoring Month: Days of Service Events Encourage Community, Giving Back

February 6, 2020, bigstwincities

On Saturday, Jan. 11, Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities launched the first of four BBBS “Days of Service” events at Bundles of Love in New Brighton. Fifteen Big-Little matches joined us for a day sorting, stuffing, sewing and packing to create bundles full of supplies that will support new mothers in caring for their newborn infants. In advance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, matches also took time during the event to reflect on the teachings of Dr. King and discuss ways they can address inequalities in their own communities.

It was wonderful to see our Littles so excited to help others, and listening to their conversations about embodying selflessness was truly inspiring! We were fortunate to have a second opportunity to serve at Bundles of Love on Jan. 21.

On Jan. 16 and 25 we had more opportunities for service, joining volunteer teams at Feed My Starving Children. Over the two service days, 43 matches packed nutritious meals for hungry children around the world. While they worked there was some robust conversation about food security, and our Littles’ grasp of the problem and their empathy for those who struggle to feed their families was humbling.
