Try it Together Tuesday: Spring Time Science

March 30, 2021, Katie Sobolewski

It’s time for another “Try it Together Tuesday,” where we share new ideas on ways to interact with your Little! Check back with us every week to discover engaging ways to keep your Match connected virtually or in person.

Spring Time Science – April Showers

The days are getting days longer, the grass greener, and the sky rainier. Spring is finally here! Celebrate the season change with this rain-cloud-in-a-jar experiment by Play Learn Grow

Materials Needed

  • Shaving cream
  • Water
  • Clear cup or jar
  • Food coloring
  • Eye dropper or pipettes

Method

  • Fill the jars or containers you are using 3/4 of the way with water.
  • Then, carefully add shaving foam to the water surface so that it resembles a cloud. Set this aside, allowing a few minutes for the shaving cream to fully settle on top of the water.
  • In a bowl/s mix a few drops of food coloring with 1/4 cup of water. This will act as “rain”.
  • Fill pipettes or droppers with blue water and squeeze it onto clouds. Inserting the tip of the pipette into the cloud will help the cloud fill faster.
  • Squeeze more and more blue water into the cloud.  As the cloud fills with water, it will become oversaturated, causing it to rain inside the jar.

This rain cloud experiment is a great way to visually illustrate the weather cycle and is simple enough to be conducted in person or via video chat! Check out these other science experiments to plan a full day of Spring-themed fun!
