Try it Together Tuesday: How to Make a Protest Poster

June 9, 2020, Katie Sobolewski

In remembrance of George Floyd and the countless people experiencing injustice across the world, this week’s “Try it Together Tuesday,” features a BBBS Free Arts project that inspires matches to continue the fight for freedom and equality. Art=Activism

Check back with us every week to discover meaningful ways to keep connected while staying apart.

How to Make a Protest Poster

1. Gather materials such as cardboard, poster board, construction paper, markers, paint and crayons.

2. Take some time to reflect. What are some things in the world that are bothering you? What feels unfair or wrong?

3. Brainstorm some ideas on what you’d like to say about those injustices. Come up with a phrase or short statement (no longer than 7 words).

4. Think of some symbols and colors to portray your message (limit your color palette to 2-3 colors).

5. Make it!

6. Take it to the streets, tape it to your front door or a window, put it in your yard, post it on social media! Let your voice be heard!

This activity can be done together with your Little in person, over video chat, or on the phone. If you’re not able to connect physically or virtually with your Little, you can still help them create a protest poster of their own! Print out the directions above, and leave them a package with the materials they need. When you connect next, you can discuss the art that you created and the significance it has with you.

Please note that this activity may bring up sensitive topics. In order to best support you’re little, check out the BBBS Blog for 5 Tips for Having Meaningful Conversations with Children & Others.

Don’t forget to post (with your Little’s parent or guardian’s permission) to our Facebook or Instagram profiles and use the hashtag #KeepKidsConnected to highlight all the fun you’re having!
