Return to in-person events with T(OUR) City Challenge

March 4, 2021, Lori Dossett

After a year of events being on hold due to the pandemic, we were excited to finally be able to celebrate with our Bigs and Littles in person at our new event series, T(OUR) City Challenges. The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden was the perfect place for our inaugural event on February 27, with plenty of space to be together in a safe, socially distanced environment. Matches toured the sculpture garden together while completing interactive challenges events and soaking up the sunshine on a bright and warm winter day.

Little Brother Kevin shows off his replica of the famous Hahn/Cock sculpture.

This self-led tour of the Sculpture Garden consisted of four different “challenges” — 1) creating a “cherry in the spoon” catapult, 2) making play dough sculptures; 3) redesigning Robert Indian’s famous “Love” sculpture and 4) identifying and evaluating abstract art.

“Our goal for the T(OUR) City events is to provide matches with a safe way to connect,” says Katie Sobolewski, BBBS programming coordinator. “Many matches have reported feeling isolated and disconnected, so our hope is that touring iconic locations across the Twin Cities will give our Bigs and Littles the opportunity to reconnect with their communities and with each other.”

No surprise that matches enthusiastically endorsed the event. Little Sister Shaniyah and Big Sister Lynesha, winners of the selfie challenge, said that their favorite part of the day was learning about the inspiration and interpretation of the statues, especially the cherry in the spoon. They also loved using Play Dough to create a replica of the giant chicken!

T(OUR) City Challenges are scheduled in March 27 at US Bank Stadium and April 24 at Minnehaha Falls. We’re thrilled to carefully and thoughtfully return to in-person events while keeping the safety and healthy of our Bigs, Littles, and staff the number one priority.
