Little’s Spotlight: Federated Challenge Scholarship

December 20, 2022, Katie Huynh

Continuing education after high school can be costly. Expenses like tuition, books, and transportation quickly add up. Thanks to the generosity of our partners at Federated Insurance, we’re able to offer the Federated Challenge Scholarship to current and former Littles who are interested in pursuing a non-four-year education after high school. For up to $5,000, students can use the scholarship funds to help pay for fees, supplies, books, and other necessary expenses.

We’d like to introduce you to one of the 14 Federated Challenge Scholarship winners – Little Sister Erica! We asked her to share her academic and career goals, and how she plans to use the scholarship funds.

What are your educational and career plans after high school?

My goal is to become a veterinarian. My interest to work with animals started with a trip to the vet hospital when I was 13. We had taken my first cat Knight there because he had stomach pain. I saw how the veterinarian was able to diagnose what was wrong with my cat and provide comfort and treatment. Since then, it has always been my dream to do the same. I’ve taken classes like Animal Care Management that taught me how to care for animals. This scholarship will help me obtain my two-year degree in Animal Science to become a veterinarian technician!

How do you plan to use the scholarship funds?

I plan to use the money for books, tuition, and transportation costs. The scholarship will give me needed financial assistance since I’ll be paying for my education entirely by myself.

At BBBS, we strongly believe in early career exploration for young people. Through our College & Career Readiness Program, Littles can learn about classes they can take in high school to further their interests, explore career paths, and gain access to scholarships to support their dreams – like Erica’s in becoming a veterinarian.
