Meet Leah Moore, Free Arts Program Manager
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background? What drew you to BBBS?
I have a background in non-profit management and as a teacher. I had a few strategic adults in my life who helped me accomplish so much that I always felt drawn to trying to do the same for others.
What part of your BBBS’ mission to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships resonates most strongly with you?
Kids are resilient. But they are also sensitive and even a small dose of encouragement, understanding or support can go a long way! I think it is important to have as many adults as possible out there teaching and learning from youth – it takes a village.
BBBS advocates the importance of community and empowering potential. How do you see your role fitting into this?
As the manager of the Free Arts program, I work closely with 20 community partner sites to make sure our programs run successfully and youth are introduced to new arts experiences. Creativity can empower us in many ways, not just in the arts. But art is a great, safe space to practice trying. Facilitating hundreds of adult mentors to build relationships with youth in the community is a tremendous motivator!
Can you share a particularly meaningful experience that you have had working at BBBS?
Every time I visit one of our sites, I am reminded of how impactful our program is. I make a new young friend or leave with a masterpiece that has been gifted to me or the memory of a conversation that has often taught me something new. There is no one experience that has been more meaningful than others, but there is a general theme that what we do at BBBS matters and the people who are making it happen work hard to support each other along the way.
Who and what inspires you?
My daughter. She reminds to be present and find humor in everything.
