Meet a Match! Giselle & Kelsey
January 26, 2018 , Suzy Piper
Giselle and Kelsey have been matched for 3 school years now in the Beyond School Walls General Mills Program. They meet twice a month at General Mills over the lunch hour to eat, catch up, do activities and spend time together. They really enjoy cooking so they have been looking up recipes to make in coffee mugs and they have tried a couple out so far this year!
Their favorite things to do include making desserts in the microwave, taking their picture by the 150th birthday sign at General Mills and painting on canvas. Giselle said she enjoys Kelsey because she is nice, smart and thoughtful. Kelsey said that Giselle is bright and energetic. She likes that Giselle is open minded and is always up for anything!
These two also learn from one another. Giselle says that Kelsey taught her how to recycle. Kelsey says that Giselle taught her how to spend quality time with the people in her life. Giselle really recognizes the importance of their time together, which keeps their match going strong! They enjoy challenging each other and keeping each other accountable of their personal goals.
We wish Giselle and Kelsey many more years of friendship!
Beyond School Walls
Mentoring is good for kids and good for business. In our innovative Beyond Schools Walls program, we bring the Littles right to the workplace twice monthly for lunch, fun and learning. Activities can include career explorations, arts and crafts, games and guided conversations. Big Brothers Big Sisters staff are present to provide support, coordinate activities and ensure safety.
The Littles get a glimpse into a corporate setting that can open their imaginations to a wide variety of careers while developing a one-on-one bond with a caring adult. And the Bigs benefit too. They report a higher sense of job satisfaction, tend to stick with their current employer longer, and nearly all say that spending time with their Little makes them a better person.
Beyond School Walls partners provide at least 25 employee mentors, encouragement for employees to dedicate time to their Little, and a large space like a common room or cafeteria where the Bigs and Littles can meet. Corporate partners combine their philanthropy and employee engagement efforts into one meaningful program.
Thank you to our current Beyond School Walls partners, Cargill, Carlson, Comcast, and General Mills. There’s always room for more!
